How therapy works

“The therapist must strive to create a new therapy for each patient” - Irving Yalom

My approach as a therapist is to create a therapy just for you, one that draws from evidence-based practice but is also responsive and customized to your unique human experience. I see therapy as an active and collaborative conversation in the context of a trusting relationship between client and therapist. The approaches described below are what I consider the cornerstones of my therapeutic style.

acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT for short) uses acceptance and mindfulness techniques in combination with behavioral changes to help people live meaningful lives based on their personal values. ACT skills are designed to increase your psychological flexibility - meaning you become better able to deal with change while living fully in the present moment. ACT skills can help you deal with distressing thoughts and emotions, improve your problem-solving capabilities, and identify what is truly important and meaningful to you.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is an evidence-based treatment protocol often used for the treat trauma symptoms, though it can also be very helpful in the treatment of anxiety and other mental health symptoms. I have completed basic EMDR training through an EMDRIA-approved provider and am currently working toward higher levels of training and certification. I have found EMDR to be an incredible tool both for helping people process and heal from trauma, and also for helping people get “unstuck” around issues that they may have been trying to address through talk therapy for a long time.

EXISTENTIALISM

Sometimes my clients come to therapy with a specific goal in mind or a behavior they want to change, but often, after we’ve tackled these, bigger questions arise. Questions like: What makes my life meaningful? Who is my true self, or my higher self? How do I make sense of life, death, and the universe at large? I can support you as you build a philosophical or spiritual framework that is unique to you and provides you with peace and purpose.
